Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MHPSA) Signs Contract to Supply M501J Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine for Grand River Dam Authority’s (GRDA) New Power Generation Facility

(Lake Mary, FL) Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. Executives from MHPSA and GRDA met in Tulsa Oklahoma on March 21st to finalize the contracts to supply a natural gas powered M501J Gas Turbine, SRT-50 Steam Turbine and associated electric generators. The power generation equipment will be installed as part of the new Unit #3 at GRDA’s existing power generation facility in Chouteau, Oklahoma. Under a separate long term service agreement, MHPSA will also provide comprehensive maintenance for the gas turbine and associated electric generator.

Dan Sullivan, GRDA CEO, and Yoshihiro Shiraiwa, President and CEO of MHPSA signed the agreement during a public gathering at the GRDA Engineering and Technology Center in Tulsa. Also present were executives of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS), Takato Nishizawa, President and CEO and Yasuo Fujitani, Senior Executive Vice President. The Unit #3 power train will be a “combined cycle” generation unit with the capability to efficiently produce 495 megawatts (MW) of electricity while also helping GRDA meet new emissions regulations set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“One of the key features of this machine is its efficiency,” said Bill Newsom, Vice President of New Equipment Sales & Commercial Operations for MHPSA. “At base load the M501J will provide over 61 percent combined cycle efficiency. In addition, at 50 percent output, you’re still above 55 percent combined cycle efficiency.” This M501J Gas Turbine will be the first of its kind in North America. Construction of Unit #3 will begin in 2015 and it is expected to become operational in 2017.

The M501J Gas Turbine is one of the most efficient, large capacity gas turbines in the world. With this announcement, MHPS has now received orders for 28 units of the J series turbine worldwide. There are currently 9 M501J 60 Hz turbines in operation and the 60 Hz J fleet has accumulated more than 33,000 hours of operation to date. The M501J Gas Turbine to be installed at the GRDA power generation facility will be manufactured at MHPSA’s Savannah Machinery Works; its turbine manufacturing and service facility located in Savannah, GA.
