M501J Gas Turbine Surpasses 8,000 Hours Commercial Operation at

Kansai Electric Power’s Himeji No. 2 Power Station

(Lake Mary, FL, June 24, 2014) The state-of-the-art M501J gas turbine started validation operation in 2011 and has accumulated in excess of 16,000 actual operating hours. Recently, Himeji No.2 Power Plant Unit No.1 has surpassed an 8,000 actual operating hours benchmark since its commercial operation in August 2013.  This most recent achievement at Himeji No.2 Power Plant further illustrates the superior reliability and proven performance of the M501J.

MHPS has now received orders for 30 J-series turbines worldwide.  There are currently 10 M501J 60 Hz turbines in operation with more than 44,000 hours of operation accumulated to date.

The Himeji No.2 Power Station, which utilizes Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) as its fuel, is Kansai Electric Power’s largest-scale thermal power generation plant. The plant is configured with six M501J gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation units each having an output of 486.5 MW providing a total output of 2,919 megawatts (MW). To date, the first three units have gone into commercial operation; the remaining three units will progressively go into service by March 2015.

Originally launched in 2009, the J-Series gas turbine was developed by MHPS utilizing proven and proprietary technologies. The J-series gas turbine is able to operate at a turbine inlet temperature of 1,600°C (2,912°F), enabling it to be one of the most efficient, large capacity gas turbines in the world.  This higher efficiency also provides for lower operating costs and reduced impact to the environment with lower Green House Gas emissions. The J-Series gas turbine has continued to be the technology selected by power producers world-wide.
